Over 40 years of computer, networking, electronics and broadcast radio experience. Extensive exposure to customers in a field engineering and IT environment. Strong, proven project management background as well as headcount and P&L management experience. Heavily traveled worldwide to resolve technical problems and customer issues. My most recent work has been in a network engineering capacity, designing, implementing and managing Remote Management Systems and Network Operations Centers (NOC).
Background includes very heavy LAN WAN network engineering experience. Extensive project and people management experience. Very good Software QA background. Strong systems installation, integration, troubleshooting and support background in an IT and Field Engineering environment. Very strong network security background includes security audits, defining "best practices", IDS systems, firewalls and dealing with denial of service (DoS), hack attempts, brute force attacks and so on. Experienced Network Operations Center NOC development Architect using BMC Patrol, HP Openview and other high end monitoring software products.
Created the concept of Monitoring Service Provider (MSP) and the business model of outsourced IT service availability monitoring utilizing a cost center NOC that I designed and turned into a highly profitable revenue center.
Heavily traveled worldwide, providing Level 4 (Last Resort) PDP-11 and VAX VMS system support to area specialists, technical support engineers and distributor technical agents. Have lived abroad for lengthy periods while performing these support duties.
Built field service, technical support, SQA, systems test, operations and customer technical training organizations 'from the ground up' at 2 companies.
Designed, planned, installed and supported several large LAN WAN facilities.
Designed and implemented some of the early SNMP remote management systems used on the West Coast. Attained Developer Architect level skills with SunNet Manager, Sun Solstice Enterprise Manager, IBM Tivoli Netview for RS6000, Bay Networks Optivity, HP Openview Operations, Openview Network Node Manager, Network General Distributed Sniffers, Network General SLM, Microsoft SMS and more. Have designed, implemented and managed many carrier enterprise class 7x24x365 Remote management facilities and Network Operations Centers in high performance SLA environments.
Managed and implemented a 250 VAX VMS 11/750 servers in a DECnet/X.25 environment roll-out at Schlumberger, Paris, France. Inter-continental systems networking was virtually unheard of at the time (1981)
Managed the conversion of DEC PDP-11 based PCB, VLSI, 2D/3D and CNC CAD/CAM applications to a VAX VMS platform. Handled the project from design inception to post production ( 2 1/2 years).
Developed, prototyped and implemented remote diagnostic troubleshooting capabilities for VAX VMS customers (including satisfying security issues for DOD, DOE, etc.) in the late 1970's, before the technology was proven or popular.
Established a Compugraphic Canada field service presence, setting up local offices, hiring staff, implementing training, managing inventory and setting up customs procedures.
Established spare parts inventory management, testing, repair and defective returns procedures for Applicon's Mexico City, Paris and Johannesburg, distributors.
Developed, documented and administered many technical and highly advanced (train the trainer) hardware, software, operating system, networking and applications training courses.
